170 Tempo SATA X4P: 1) Although labeled a 3726, software identifies the drive enclosure's port multiplier as a Silicon Image 4726, but without the RAID features 2) With no drives in the enclosure, Disk Utility shows a "phantom" SV-2000 device 3) Completely unpredictable performance and reliability of drives mounted in these enclosures.May-07-09
fter much testing of drive enclosures with Silicon Image 3726 and 4726 port multipliers, Sonnet discovered that many of the 3726-based solutions (3726 integrated onto a PCB for use in an enclosure) were shipped with old firmware. While the chip itself is physically labeled 3726, it identifies itself to the system as a 4726.

How to determine whether the Silicon Image port multiplier chip is identifying itself correctly to the system:

1) Turn on your system and drive enclosure (make sure the two are connected).
2) Launch the Console application found in Applications/Utilities.
3) In the system.log window, click the Logs button in the upper left corner to select the system.log file. In the upper right corner, type "port multiplier" in the filter field, and then press the return key; the filtered resutls will show the port multiplier firmware identificationn.

Firmware with no issues will display either:
SonnetSATA::detectDrivesOnChannel@0: Port Multiplier 0x1095 0x3726 0x17 0x06 0x06
SonnetSATA::detectDrivesOnChannel@0: Port Multiplier 0x1095 0x4726 0x1F 0x06 0x07

Problematic firmware for the 3726 will display:
SonnetSATA::detectDrivesOnChannel@0: Port Multiplier 0x1095 0x4726 0x00 0x06 0x06

The key to identifying problematic firmware is the 0x00 firmware revision in the third number.

Solution: Update the port multiplier board's firmware.

Updating the port multiplier firmware solves this problem. Silicon Image can provide the latest firmware, but the flasher program only works with PCs. If you have a PC with a Serial ATA host adapter, you may update the firmware yourself. Visit Silicon Image's support page. Dwnload both files and update your drive enclosure's port multiplier firmware to the correct version. Note that you must have a drive installed in the enclosure to update the firmware.

If you do not have access to a PC with a Serial ATA host adapter, please contact the company that sold you your port multiplier board, tell them your Silicon Image 3726 port multiplier board identifies itself as a 4726, and ask them to help you resolve the issue.

About the Sonnet Fusion 500P: This product uses the latest port multiplier firmware and has been verified to work properly with Sonnet Tempo E4P and X4P port multiplier-aware Serial ATA host adapters.
