585 Will Bluetooth and Wi-Fi work when a Mac mini is racked in a RackMac mini and DuoModo xMac mini Module?Nov-04-21
Yes, both may work, conditionally. The Bluetooth and wireless antennas are exposed in the rear of the RackMac mini and DuoModo xMac mini Module. However, the steel chassis may prevent effective use. If you don't get adequate reception, then you can put the Sonnet USB Bluetooth or Edimax Wi-Fi dongle into the front USB port (or rear USB port with extender cable) to get functionality.

For Blutooth reception, use the Sonnet USB-BT4 Long-Range USB Bluetooth 4.0 Micro Adapter.
To use the Sonnet external Bluetooth 4.0 adapter on macOS:
1. Open Bluetooth System Preferences
2. Unpair all bluetooth devices from the internal bluetooth.
3. Check "Show Bluetooth in menu bar"
4. Option-click Bluetooth in menu bar, and note the internal Bluetooth address
5. Turn Bluetooth off and wait 5 seconds
6. Plug in the Bluetooth adapter and wait 5 seconds
7. Turn Bluetooth on.
8. Option-click Bluetooth in menu bar to comfirm that the Bluetooth address has changed to the external Bluetooth adapter
9. Pair your Bluetooth devices
10. To make the selection permanent, in Terminal, enter sudo nvram bluetoothHostControllerSwitchBehavior=always
To restore the setting to use internal Bluetooth, enter sudo nvram bluetoothHostControllerSwitchBehavior=never
11. M1 Mac minis hide the USB ports behind the T2 security chip, so you must unplug and plug in the USB Bluetooth adapter after every boot. It is not necessary to do this on Intel Mac minis.

For better Wi-Fi reception, some customers have used the Edimax EW-7822ULC external USB 2.0 wi-fi adapter, or the faster Edimax EW-7822UTC external USB 3.0 wi-fi adapter.

649 Does the Apple Time Capsule fit in a RackMac mini?Mar-19-12
No. Even though the overall size of the Apple Time Capsule is the same as the Mac mini, the Time Capsule corner radii are smaller, so it does not fit when you install the cover, which locks the Mac mini in place. If you don't mind not installing the RackMac mini cover, the Time Capsule will fit. Be aware that the cover secures the Mac mini, and aligns the Mac mini to the power switch mechanism, the Mac mini DVD slot (if present) to the front panel slot, and the Mac mini power LED to the front panel light pipe.

1035 Does the orginial RackMac mini support 2018 Mac mini or M1 Mac mini?May-16-21
The 2018 Mac mini fits in the original RackMac mini. However, The 2018 Mac mini has larger openings than the previous Mac mini for the increased air needed to cool the 6-core 2018 Mac mini models. The original RackMac mini was not designed to accomodate this increased airflow requirement. You may use 2018 Mac mini with the original RackMac mini under the following conditions:
1) You are using only one 2018 Mac mini in a RackMac mini.
2) You can use two 2018 Mac minis, but only if they are both 4-core i3 models.
3) The LED position of the 2018 Mac mini are different than previous Mac minis, so the LED will no longer be visible in the front of the original RackMac mini. If you install a 2018 model, and you wish to make the LED visible, mark a spot relative to the existing LED hole: to the left 0.40" and down 0.76"; and drill a new hole.

Sonnet does not recommend using two 6-core 2018 Mac minis in an original RackMac mini. If you have two 2018 Mac minis, and they are 6-core i5 or i7 models, there may not be enough airflow for a heavy CPU load condition. (For example, at 20 degrees C ambient in an original RackMac mini, two 6-core i7 Mac minis running at full CPU load will cause the Mac mini to run its fans at maximum rpm. Under the same conditions at higher ambient temperatures, we believe that 6-core CPUs will thermal throttle.)

Sonnet has designed a new 2018 RackMac mini for adequate airflow for two 6-core i7 2018 Mac minis. The 2018 RackMac mini, Model RACK-MIN-2XA, is fully compatible with Mac mini models from Mid 2011 through 2018, and also with M1 Mac minis. There are two holes for LEDs that accomodate all models of Mac mini.
